Nurturing in cross cradle breastfeeding position

Let's find a way forward together

The first two weeks after your baby is born are an especially critical time in a mother’s lactation journey. This is a great time for us to meet and get breastfeeding off to a great start.

If your baby is older, you’re in the midst of the 4th trimester or the tricky 4/5 month ‘fussies’ and you’ve not managed to overcome the earlier challenges or new hurdles have cropped up then we can get feeding back on track – physically and emotionally.

What you receive

My approach is to offer support in your home (or in hospital) ensuring you are comfortable in your surroundings. Each consultation is tailored to your unique needs and circumstances; the topics we discuss will reflect the specific challenges you are facing.

  • Observation of a full feeding session
  • Evaluation of latch, positioning and milk transfer
  • Assessment of any feeding challenges such as low milk supply, oversupply, reflux, painful/damaged nipples and shallow latch
  • Gentle body work to release tension in baby’s jaw and body, especially helpful post frenotomy
  • Step-by-step support for a deep latch and comfortable position that works for your baby, your body and your breasts.
  • Effective winding (burping) manoeuvres using gentle pressure and rotation without harsh patting
  • A comprehensive feeding plan for YOUR journey within your context
  • Strategies for exclusive pumping or combination feeding if required
  • Tips and information relevant to you on paced bottle feeding, sterilising and milk storage
  • Identification of potential oral restrictions such a tongue-tie and an onward referral as necessary
  • On-going support via phone/WhatsApp/email for questions for 14 days following the consultation (not videocall)
  • Discounted fee for a follow-up visits

Helping you go with the flow

  • Listening and observing

My initial role is to listen carefully and observe. During our time together, I will watch at least one feed as we talk. Observing your baby at the breast provides valuable insight—not only into latch, sucking, and swallowing, but also into signs of tension in your baby’s body. Sometimes, your baby may be more comfortable when positioned differently and this can make a huge difference. I always consider the broader context, including your physical and emotional wellbeing while feeding.

  • Addressing questions

You & your partner will have many questions. It's a vulnerable time and there is no expectation for you to be strong or brave; it's your opportunity to speak openly and share your worries.

  • Support for all situations

Whether you are dealing with minor challenges or more complex clinical scenarios, together we will work to restore balance and get things back on track allowing you to go with the flow and enjoy feeding your baby.

  • Creating a plan

We can develop a plan together. This may be a feeding plan if your baby’s weight is a concern, or if you find yourself in an endless cycle of triple feeding or formula top-up’s you want to stop. If an oral assessment indicates your baby may have a tongue restriction impacting feeding, I can refer you to a tongue-tie practitioner or other professionals as necessary. Often, just a single visit is enough to get feeding back on track. Sometimes, simple adjustments, tweaks, and encouragement during the consultation are all that’s needed to make a significant difference for you and your baby.

Ready to talk?

A typical consultation lasts around 90 minutes, but I am on ‘baby-time’ and I too will go with the flow. If our session takes closer to two hours, that is absolutely fine.

I carry small items with me that may be used in a consultation, and these will be provided as part of the consultation fee.

I’m fully expecting your home to be dishevelled and you to be in your pyjamas so no need to tidy up or smarten up. It’s also ok to share your emotions, I want to understand how you’re feeling.

You don’t need to be brave, hold back the tears or pretend everything is ok – you have just had a baby and I remember well the feeling that the world just tilted on it’s axis.

I will bring a doll and a variety of knitted breasts (different shapes and sizes!) as teaching aids.
