Why Embracing Uncertainty Is the Secret to a Peaceful Start

Breastfeeding journeys are as unique as the families who undertake them – some stretch over weeks, others months, and for some, years. Whether your journey is exclusive, mixed, complicated, or unexpectedly beautiful, each path is valid and worthy of celebration.

There’s no single “right path” when it comes to breastfeeding.

My message to you is simple: trust your journey. Sometimes the most powerful approach is the simplest one—

“Go with the flow”

As a lactation consultant, this phrase has become the heart of my practice. It encapsulates my philosophy and the core support I offer: helping new parents navigate the crucial, often overwhelming, 0–6 months after birth. But what does “go with the flow” truly mean? Why do I find myself gently repeating it to anxious parents?

Our bodies are remarkable. Breasts are designed to respond to a baby’s needs—milk flows on demand whenever a baby, pump or hand asks. It’s an immediate process: milk is produced to order, drawn from a mother’s own blood, a living connection between parent and child.

At its heart, breastfeeding is a natural and instinctive way to nourish your child. Yet, this doesn’t mean it’s easy. Many mothers encounter hurdles that make the journey feel anything but instinctive. If it were straightforward, there’d be no need for lactation consultants!

In the context of breastfeeding, “Go With The Flow” means listening deeply to your body and your heart. It’s about tuning in to your intuition and trusting the wisdom within.

The relationship between mother and baby is intense—full of ups and downs, rarely linear, and often unfolds differently than expected. “Go with the flow” is a gentle reassurance: you haven’t failed, you are enough for your baby, and you are doing your absolute best.

It also means accepting that some things are beyond our control. Past surgeries, health conditions, or mental health struggles can make breastfeeding more challenging, and that’s okay.

Many mothers move from high-powered, stressful jobs where they felt strong and in control, straight into the unknown territory of newborn life. Suddenly, there can be feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. Trusting your baby’s cues instead of questioning them, and letting go of rigid routines, can bring surprising peace. Parent the baby in your arms, not the one described in books. Let each hour and day unfold in harmony with your baby’s changing needs.

Breastfeeding teaches a different kind of strength—the strength to slow down, adapt and be present.

Trust your body and your baby; together, you’ll find a new rhythm, unique to your family.

Going with the Flow isn’t surrender—it’s deep responsiveness.

Pause and breathe. Take pride in everything you’ve done for your baby and the love you pour into them each day, whatever form that takes. Every breastfeeding journey is different, and that’s something to be celebrated.

Your instincts matter. There is no single ‘right’ path. Honour your journey without comparison. Let go of guilt and embrace what works for you and your baby.

“Go With the Flow” is intentional softness.

It’s choosing connection instead of control.

It’s accepting the seasons rather than resisting them.

It’s understanding that nourishment isn’t only milk—it’s comfort, warmth and presence.

Flexibility isn’t weakness—it’s motherhood in motion.

“Go with the flow”, that’s often where the peace and magic happens.
