Breastfeeding can be challenging

Almost every expectant mother intends to breastfeed. Yet by six months, only around 1 in 3 are still doing so. Breastfeeding challenges are common and are the primary reason that mothers end their breastfeeding journey prematurely.

A significant part of what makes those early days so hard is simply not knowing what to expect.

We meet before your baby arrives so you can take it all in and ask questions without a newborn in your arms, and build the knowledge and skills that will make a real difference from day one.

You want to enjoy those early weeks with your baby. Not feel like you are in survival mode.

The process happening within your breasts is truly remarkable, and a basic understanding of breastmilk production will support and motivate you on your breastfeeding journey.

During our session, we will discuss colostrum and how your breastmilk evolves in the hours, days, and months after birth.

The first two weeks after your baby is born are the most critical time in a mother’s lactation journey

Learning how to hand express colostrum—sometimes called colostrum harvesting—before your baby arrives can be very helpful. I will show you the technique using a knitted breast to demo. If you are at least 36 weeks pregnant and have a low-risk pregnancy, I can help you begin to hand express and freeze your own colostrum in preparation for your baby’s arrival. If you have gestational diabetes or you’re expecting a SGA baby, even more reason to learn the skill and support your baby after birth.

Correct positioning and attachment at the breast is fundamental. Helping your baby achieve a deep latch and being familiar with different feeding positions are the most valuable skills for successful breastfeeding. Learn before baby arrives

A couple of months into motherhood, you will find yourself offering words of wisdom to the tired mum you meet pushing her baby around the park or waiting in the queue at Tesco!

You can book an antenatal session as a standalone session or as part of a bundle of sessions.

Research has shown that at least three face-to-face lactation consultations - with one taking place prenatally and two in the post-partum period - improve breastfeeding rates.
